The Ford Motor Company 820 automotive engine developed during the 1970s successfullyoperated for about 25 hours, but failed during shutdown when high friction at the curvic coupling interface of the ceramic rotor with the metal shaft resulted in a contact stress failure [191. In the same Brittle Materials Design, High Temperature Turbine Program, Westinghouse encountered fractures at the interface between stator vanes and end caps in the 30 MW engine components rig testing [211]. Honeywell (and their predecessors) in their many programs encountered contact stress failures in various components: (1) points of attachment of static structure components, (2) attachment dovetail of ceramic blades inserted in metal disks, and (3) shrink fit attachment of a radial rotor to a metal shaft [20,163].

The target performance of HGT is shown in Table 1. The turbine inlet temperature (TIT) of HGT is higher than the M7A-02, so the thermal efficiency and output are higher. Long-term engine test was started from 2002FY at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Akashi Works. Figure 1 shows the development organization of NEDO-HGT program. Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) takes charge of the research on the reliability of HGT engine. Kyocera corporation takes charge of the development and evaluation of the heat-resistant ceramic component.
